What you should know about Fuel Tank

The importance of the fuel tank

The fuel tank is intended to receive and store fuel from a motor vehicle or aerodyne in liquid form. Formerly made of sheet metal, it is now mostly made of synthetic material for weight and safety reasons.

The role of fuel tank positioning for cars

In general, all the parts of a car are regulated according to a very precise order: the steering wheel is placed on the left (with the exception of certain countries), the rear-view mirrors are placed in their usual positions... On the other hand, the fuel tank is an anti-system that is often placed in a hazardous way, either on the left or on the right. And why this random status?

The security reason

This is the most popular explanation for this issue: the tank lid is placed next to the passenger seat for safety purposes. This choice then guarantees the safety of the driver through his vehicle, while refuelling, against the actions or skidding of other cars on the road. This characterizes the choice of Japanese cars, which places it generally on the left, and European cars generally on the right.

The challenge of comfort

In some cases, some car manufacturers justify the positioning of the tank cap close to the driver's seat for comfort reasons, thus preventing the driver from driving around the car before refuelling.

Technical reasons

The reality is that some manufacturers prefer to choose the location based on the vehicle model. This is due to technical requirements that force the manufacturer to choose this or that location. In short, the location of the tank is often modified according to the structure and layout of certain parts of the car. (1) We talk about Energy, air & water on our blog section.
