Parasol: definition and uses

A parasol is a large umbrella used to protect one or more people from the sun's rays. Usually used in the summer, the parasol is usually installed in a fixed position, for example on the beach or on the terrace of a restaurant, and is not intended to be worn like an ordinary umbrella. It consists of a long handle topped by a folding mechanism, allowing a protective canvas to be unfurled like an umbrella. The handle and the opening mechanism are often made of metal, while the canvas is now tending to be replaced by a synthetic material, which provides the best possible UV filtering.

The use of umbrellas, which has been attested for centuries, has experienced an important boom with the advent of tourism in the 19th century, and became one of the indispensable accessories of the bourgeoisie and the rich aristocracy on holiday on beaches, especially the Mediterranean coast.

There are several types of parasols :

- The upright parasol, the most common model...
- The wall-mounted, fixed parasol, which extends a shaded area close to the facades of a house or an establishment
- The tilting sunshade, useful to protect from the sun at any time of the day.
- The deported parasol, often large, mobile, practical during receptions or outdoor gala in summer.
