Conventional tile cutters can create "controlled breaks" by marking the tile or glass with a glassmaker's diamond, which is made of tungsten carbide. The tiles are placed on a plate and then a break is initiated by rubbing the diamond along the piece with a lever.
These tile cutters are equipped with a "Y" shaped part that allows to cleanly break the tile "marked" on the weakened part.
There are also "electric" tile cutters, whose principle is different from conventional tile cutters. These are in fact circular saws equipped with a "diamond" disc specially designed for cutting tiles.
