What you should know about Shock absorber
A shock absorber allows the violence of an impact to be attenuated thanks to a mechanical system. There are different physical processes that allow this in various environments.
More common in the automotive industry, the fluid damper is most often used.
Here are some examples of models :
- the hydraulic shock absorber is the most common model. It brakes and slows down the oscillations caused by the spring and plates the wheel on the ground.
- the oleopneumatic shock absorber has a chamber that contains compressed nitrogen.
- the inertia damper has an inertia beater consisting of an oil-filled cylinder in which a cast iron mass moves.
Important organs in a car, they must be checked regularly for reliable road holding. At high speeds, used shock absorbers present a serious danger.
Shock absorbers can also be found in a washing machine, on a bicycle, on a pallet truck. (1)
